WAFCON 2024: Bayana Bayana coach Ellis reveals why her side lost to Super Falcons

South Africa head coach Ellis Madugu has attributed her team’s 2–1 defeat to Nigeria’s Super Falcons in the semifinal of the Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) to missed scoring opportunities.

The Super Falcons edged past Banyana Banyana to book their place in the grand finale—a milestone they failed to reach in the previous edition of the tournament.

Nigeria captain Rasheedat Ajibade opened the scoring in the first half following a dominant display by the nine-time African champions.

South Africa responded through Linda Motlhalo, who converted a penalty on the half-hour mark to restore parity.

However, Michelle Alozie netted the decisive goal to seal the win for Justine Madugu’s side.
Reacting after the match, Ellis expressed disappointment over her team’s inability to capitalize on their chances.
“We wanted to win. If we had taken our chances, we could have won the game,” she said.

Nigeria will now face tournament hosts Morocco in the final on Saturday, July 26.
