Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has thrown his weight behind the Democratic Republic of Congo to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Despite Senegal striker Nicolas Jackson and the Senegalese national team being drawn in the same group as the Leopards, the former Manchester City defender expressed his support for the country of his roots.
However, Kompany also wished the Senegal international well ahead of the AFCON finals.
“Of course, I’d like Congo to win this Africa Cup of Nations, but otherwise, I wish Nicolas all the best,” the Belgian said.
“My understanding is that he’ll be traveling to the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal after the match against Mainz,” Kompany added.
Kompany was born in Uccle, Brussels, to a Congolese father and has maintained strong ties to his heritage.
DR Congo have been pitted in Group D alongside Senegal, Botswana, and Benin Republic.
Kompany: „We wish Nicolas all the best. I hope he goes as far as possible, because this tournament is so important for African players. But of course, I want Congo to win the AFCON"
