Uzoho or Okoye: Super Eagles coach picks Nigeria's number one

Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer Ike Shorunmo has rehashed that Omonia Nicosia shot-stopper Francis Uzoho remains Nigeria's number one.

Uzoho and Okoye have been in contention for Super Eagles' number position.

Watford goalie, Okoye was preferred by Augustine Eguaveon during the 2021 Nations Cup in Cameroon earlier this year.

Portuguese tactician Jose Peseiro has given the nod to Francis Uzoho since taking over from Augustine Eguaveon in June.

The duo has come under heavy criticism for their mistakes which have proven costly in certain situations.

Maduka Okoye's goalkeeping error caused the Super Eagles to crash out of the 2021 Nations Cup after the three-time African champions lost by a lone goal to Tunisia in the knockout stage.

Francis Uzoho replicated a similar error when he failed to deal with a Thomas Partey strike causing Nigeria a ticket to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The performance of the two goalkeepers has left fans questioning who number one-shot stopper for the Eagles, but Ike Shorunmo insists Francis Uzoho remains the team's number one.

“We are looking inwards to get credible goalkeepers from the domestic league,” Shorunmu told the Guardian.

“As you can see, the Nigeria Professional Football League has not been active, and we cannot assess the goalkeepers right now.

“So, Uzoho will remain the first-choice goalkeeper till a better keeper is discovered from the NPFL or any other league.

“I have been an advocate of sourcing for keepers in the domestic scene, and that vision still stands. The doors are still open for more keepers to compete in the national team.”
