Unity Cup: Ndidi, Simon, five others may miss Zimbabwe clash

Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi, Moses Simon and Akor Adams are among six players who could miss Nigeria’s 2026 Unity Cup semi-final against Zimbabwe at The Valley in London on Tuesday, May 26.

The three other players in doubt are Bruno Onyemaechi, Raphael Onyedika and Ebenezer Akinsanmiro.

The six players are doubtful for the encounter after arriving late at the team’s camp in London.

As of Monday evening, only 20 players were available for selection as coach Éric Chelle plotted his title defence.

Samson Tijani arrived on Monday to increase the number to 20.

Chelle handed Tijani his first call-up in six years after the midfielder last featured for Nigeria in a friendly defeat against Algeria in October 2020.

Nigeria will begin their title defence at the 2026 Unity Cup with a semi-final clash against Zimbabwe at The Valley in South London, while the second semi-final between Jamaica and India will take place a day later.

The winner will progress to the final on May 30 at Charlton Athletic’s stadium.

Recent meetings between Nigeria and Zimbabwe suggest the fixture could be closely contested. The two sides played out 1-1 draws in both of their recent World Cup qualifying meetings.

A closer look at Nigeria’s recent form also shows they have drawn three of their last four internationals within 90 minutes. Their last defeat in regulation time came against Egypt in a friendly in December last year.

Zimbabwe, however, are unlikely to be pushovers. The Warriors are currently on a three-match winning run-in international friendlies, with their last defeat coming in November last year.
