UK-based Nigerian pastor hits out at 'weakling' Manchester United, English media over treatment of Mason Greenwood

Nigerian lawyer and pastor based in the United Kingdom, Dele Olawanle has hit out at Manchester United management over their decision to drop Mason Greenwood.

Recall that Greenwood was arrested for serious sexual charges in February of this year. The charges were ultimately dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) following the withdrawal of a key witness.

Although he was free to resume his career, Manchester United kept Greenwood suspended on full pay while indicating they were conducting their own investigation into the player.

As Greenwood was to be welcomed back to the team, there was a massive public outcry causing United to make a U-turn and finally let the English forward move else and away from Old Trafford.

Disappointed by the actions of Man United, staunch fan of the football club, Dele Olawanle took to Twitter to share his thoughts.

He described the management team as a ‘weakling’ who jettisoned Mason Greenwood to protect their so-called brand.

Read his statement below;

“THEY DID EVERYTHING TO GET RID OF MASON GREENWOOD.

I was in Rome, the capital of Italy enjoying my holiday with my daughter last week Tuesday when I got a frantic call from my law office that Sky News were after me.

So, Sky News called me on my mobile. They wanted to interview me on the issue of Mason Greenwood @masongreenwood at 7.20 pm that day. I told them I was ready but they did not get back to me until very late and the interview did not hold. I would have battered anyone on the opposing side to me on air and I am not joking.

The Manchester United @ManUtd current management is a weakling. They are mismanaging the team and they are mismanaging their decision-making. I watched our match against Tottenham last Saturday and I suffered. This is not the team I have been supporting for 33 years. They were all over the place being battered by the wimpy Spurs.

Charges against Mason Greenwood were dropped in February 2023. It took Manchester United a whole 6 months to make a decision. They were paying him £75,000 a week or thereabouts. Then the news broke that they were about to take him back and the ‘Ladies’ of Manchester United, four of them, stood up with a badly drafted statement against Mason Greenwood being reinstated in the team.

The management of Manchester United panicked and said they were sorry for fixing a deadline to make an announcement on the matter. A global club being bossed around like a pub team. They were trying to protect a brand that is waning by the day through an uncertain ownership of the club.

Finally, they decided to drop the poor ‘black’ boy yesterday after keeping him waiting and forcing him to make a statement to cover their inept leadership. I do not know whether I and many others will support Manchester United again.

Why am I writing this way? Their decision smirks of an injustice. He was not tried or convicted of any crime. He is still with his partner and they now have a child together. He has been with the team since the age of 7 and they failed to support him when he needed them the most.

The management of Manchester United have scored an own goal. Many parents especially black parents will not want their children to join our youth team. They know they will not support them if they have an issue. They know they will be hung out to dry. They know they will jettison them to protect their so-called brand.

Manchester City dealt with their issue very fast. That is a proper team with proper management. Ronaldo is still playing and Partey is still with Arsenal. Manchester United sacrificed a boy who has been with them since the age of 7. Where is the love? Where is the support? Where is the second chance?

The current management of Manchester United is not fit for purpose. They don’t know what they are doing. They have been bullied and pummeled into submission by a tiny mob. This matter is not over yet. I rest my case.”
