Super Eagles defender Jordan Torunarigha has been cleared to return to Hamburg training this week after missing a session following a head injury sustained during the club’s 2-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt, with coach Merlin Polzin expressing optimism over his recovery.
Torunarigha took a blow to the head during the Frankfurt match and was substituted late in the game after appearing dazed, with Danish forward Yussuf Poulsen replacing him in the final seven minutes.
The 28-year-old subsequently underwent medical assessments and sat out Wednesday’s training session.
Polzin told Hamburger Abendblatt that he hoped the Nigerian would be back on the training pitch the following day.
Torunarigha has been a key figure for Hamburg this season, making 23 league appearances as the club secured their Bundesliga status.
He joined the club from KAA Gent last summer and has drawn consistent praise from Polzin for his defensive mentality and physical commitment, with the coach previously describing him as the kind of defender no striker wants breathing down their neck.
Hamburg face SC Freiburg in their next Bundesliga fixture, and Torunarigha will be hoping to return to full fitness in time to feature.
