Throwback to Nigeria's Super Squad from the 1994 AFCON

The Nigerian national football roster that competed in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Tunisia in 1994 had several prominent names that made the squad a formidable opponent and probably the strongest Eagles squad in the country's history.

The team entered the 1994 AFCON competition as one of the three favorites to win the championship, which they did.

This occurred following their first victory in 1980.

Despite the baggage of finishing second in I984 and 88, coach Clemence Westerhof was motivated to break Nigeria's lengthy wait for her second AFCON victory, and the timing was ideal.

The golden generation, who were drawn in group B alongside Egypt and Gabon, started the game with caution, but they got off to a strong start, defeating Gabon 3-0 in their first match, with two goals from the late Rashidi Yekini and Mutiu Adepoju.

Their next match was a goalless draw against Egypt, which earned them a spot in the knockout stages.

In the second round, Zaire was a tough opponent, but Yekini's brace helped Nigeria advance to the semi-finals, where they would meet arch-rivals Ivory Coast.

After a tense match that swung back and forth, the Eagles won on penalties after 90 minutes, with extra time ending 2-2.

After its first team perished off the coast of Gabon during World Cup qualifying, Zambia gained the compassion of the footballing world.
