The video of Calvin Bassey's priceless reaction upon hearing the iconic UEFA Champions League anthem for the first time as a player has resurfaced as the new campaign begins today (Tuesday, September 16).
Having joined Eredivisie giants Ajax from Rangers for a club-record fee of €23 million, plus another potential €3 million in add-ons, the Nigerian international was named in the starting lineup for Ajax's UCL opener against his former side during the 2022/2023 season.
The Super Eagles defender had a Champions League debut to remember, as his new side thrashed his former club 4–0 in their opening game.
Despite not getting on the scoresheet, Bassey grabbed headlines with his emotional reaction to hearing the iconic Champions League anthem.
Bassey closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and opened them with a big smile after saying a short prayer.
He followed it up with a solid performance in defence alongside Jurrien Timber against his former employers.
Sharing his reaction after the game, Bassey revealed that playing in the prestigious competition had always been a lifelong dream — and being able to achieve it was surreal.
“It’s been one of my dreams, all my life, to participate in the Champions League, and to be able to do that was unreal,” Bassey explained.
“Obviously it was bittersweet because it was against my old team, but on a personal note, it was just an amazing achievement for me and my family.”
As the UEFA Champions League returns this week, fans have looked back at Calvin Bassey's unforgettable "dream come true" moment.
