Benin Republic head coach Gernot Rohr has lamented the poor treatment his team received from Argentina after their international friendly against the former world champions.
The Albiceleste defeated the Cheetahs 3-0 at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires in the early hours of Wednesday, October 7, in what was Lionel Messi’s farewell game with Argentina.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner hung up his boots with the national team in style after scoring from the spot and providing two assists for Lionel Scaloni’s side.
It was a befitting farewell for the Barcelona legend as thousands of Argentines thronged the Monumental Stadium to bid farewell to their football hero.
Despite the night being a memorable one for Messi and all Argentines, Rohr has lashed out at the South Americans over the way they treated the Benin Republic team.
According to the former Super Eagles coach, they were denied the chance to get close to the Argentine players, sign autographs and exchange jerseys with them.
Speaking on RMC radio’s Rothen s’enflamme, the 73-year-old disclosed that his team were stopped by security personnel in their attempt to meet Messi after the game.
“Yes, it was extremely difficult. We tried.
“The only shame is that the Argentines gave us nothing. No photo with Messi, no shirt. They didn’t even let us into the tunnel, nor even the dressing room,” he said.
“Security refused to let anyone in. Some players came to swap shirts, so we knew it would be difficult. We tried everything, but we got nothing,” he added.
