The 3-0 defeat of Chelsea against Bayern - Werner on how he almost dumped Blues

Timo Werner Timo Werner

Timo Werner has admitted that Chelsea's 3-0 first leg Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich last season gave him concerns about joining the club.

He completed a £48million move from RB Leipzig to Stamford Bridge this summer and has been convincing in his first two Premier League matches.

The 24-year-old finally joined the Blues following despite having fears about Frank Lampard side's form in the Champions League last campaign.

Werner told German news media outfit:

"The 3-0 home defeat of Chelsea in the first leg against Bayern hadn’t exactly spoken in favour of going to London.."I have to say that openly because with Leipzig we always played very good and close games against Bayern."Werner also insisted that Chelsea have learnt a hard lesson from the humbling defeat to Bayern at Stamford Bridge back in February by making several summer signings.

The likes of Hakim Ziyech, Thiago Silva, Ben Chilwell, Kai Havertz are among the high profile names that have joined the west London club.

Werner added:

"With Bayern showing Chelsea their weaknesses in the match, the club was able to work on the pieces of the puzzle in order to catch up with the future Champions League winners Bayern," he added. "That’s what Chelsea did."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported that Frank Lampard has insisted Timo Werner and Kai Havertz need more time to adapt after the duo's low-key performances against Liverpool.

The duo were involved in the 2-0 loss to the reigning champions on Sunday, September 20, at Stamford Bridge.

Sadio Mane scored a stunning brace in the second half of the the clash to guide the Reds to victory.

Unlike Werner, Havertz was sacrificed at the stroke of halftime, with Lampard replacing him with Fikayo Tomori in a tactical change occasioned by Andreas Christensen's red card.

Legit.ng also reported that Timo Werner made his Premier League debut in Chelsea's 3-1 win over Brighton and the German striker claims he has never played against such massive defenders.

The 24-year-old joined the Blues from RB Leipzig in the summer for £47.5m and with his performance against the Seagulls, the striker is worth every spent on him.
