Taekwondo: Anyanacho may debut against Turkish challenger

Nigeria’s sole flag bearer Elizabeth Anyanacho would most likely battle Turkey’s Nur Tatar Askari in the first round of the women’s -67kg  with the draw of the Taekwondo event of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics  to be made tomorrow.

Should that be the case, debutant Anyanacho would face a Herculean task against the world and European champion on July 26 but she remains unperturbed.

“My target is to go in there and win because we have trained hard for this and I am just going into the court and win,” she said. “I care less about anybody’s profile as I am in Tokyo to make an impact and return home with a medal; I expect to put everything I have learnt into work and expect a positive result.”

Meanwhile, Anyanacho has expressed excitement about the Kisarazu Camp of Team Nigeria: “I feel great finishing my first training with just a few days to the competition as I am also getting my body prepared for the games.

“The training camp had  been awesome and we were excited to get into the Games Village which is awesome; and it is a good experience for some of us that are making our debut in the games.

“Touching down Tokyo, there was no anxiety yet but there was the feeling of the games because we came in with other teams. I could get the feeling from the way the teams came in and we are all looking forward to the games,” she added, even commending  the  AFA kits provided for the team. “The kit is so comfortable and so nice that we have a local company producing what we wear,” she noted.
