In 2020, the German-born Super Eagles goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye joined the Rotterdammers and after two years has become a club hero.
As Maduka Okoye played his last home game for Sparta Rotterdam on Wednesday May 11, his family members and friends from Dusseldorf, 179km away from Rotterdam, were on hand to cheer him on.
The young goalkeeper joined the Dutch team from the second team of Fortuna Dusseldorf and had to wait to get his chance at the club. It came and he never looked back since then.
Last season, his heroics saved Sparta from relegation and he’s set to help the modest Rotterdam club to another season in the Eredivisie, albeit, in his absence.
Okoye kept his 6th clean sheet of the season in the Eredivisie as Sparta Rotterdam defeated PEC Zwolle 2-0 at home. It was an emotional sight for the goalie who took the megaphone and addressed the fans of the club.
Highly revered at the club, his family looked on as he made three saves to lift Sparta into 15th and away from the relegation zone.
The Rotterdammers face a final game of the season with Okoye hoping to stamp his place in the history of the club before moving to Vicarage Road where he will play in the Championship next season with Watford.
