Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye reportedly risks losing his number one spot at Serie A side Udinese.
The 27-year-old has come under severe criticism following his below-par performances for the Zebras this season.
The Nigerian international has conceded 13 goals in six appearances in goal for Udinese in the current campaign.
Okoye’s private life has also come under scrutiny following a series of public appearances with US rapper Cardi B, sparking dating rumours between the pair.
Udinese have lost their last four Serie A matches and currently sit 15th in the table.
Okoye’s error contributed to his side’s latest defeat to Torino on Monday, October 12.
When asked whether Okoye should start in the next game against Lecce, Turci defended the Nigerian international against being disciplined for a goalkeeping error.
“Following such a mistake, there is no justification in disciplining a goalkeeper as punishment,” he said, according to *Messaggero Veneto*.
“From an external perspective, Okoye must have complete confidence and serve as the starting goalkeeper against Lecce, provided he maintains composure, which Brunner and Marcon, his coaches, will assess.”
Turci, however, urged Okoye to improve his performances or risk being dropped to the bench.
“It is equally evident that confidence has limitations, and he must justify his position, because if you fail to deliver assurances over time, there is nothing in the contract preventing his replacement.”
