The real reason why FC Porto striker Samu Omorodion prefers to represent Spain at the international level over Nigeria has emerged.

Omorodion was born in Spain to Nigerian parents and is eligible to represent the Super Eagles despite playing for Spain's U-23 team at the recent Paris Olympics.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has made attempts to convince the former Atletico Madrid striker to switch allegiance and commit his international future to Nigeria.

However, reports indicate that the 20-year-old is determined to represent La Roja due to his lack of connection with his Nigerian roots.

Omorodion's father reportedly failed in his parenting duties, leaving his mother to assume all responsibilities. The young striker disclosed this in an interview with Spanish outlet Marca:

“My childhood was not very easy; it was quite hard. My mother had to look after my sister and me. She has said it, there were many times when she didn't even have enough for me to go to training, and we had to walk. Sometimes we didn't have anything to eat... It's hard,” he said.

“I remember it, and it makes me emotional. All that sacrifice has been rewarded. I knew that the time would come when my mother would be proud of me and that all the effort she made for us would be rewarded.”

Omorodion has hit the ground running since completing his move to FC Porto in the summer. The former Deportivo Alaves striker has registered seven goals in seven appearances for Porto this season.
