It is an unusual thing, but one of the biggest takeaways from the first round of games in the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League matchday is a goalkeeper scoring.

Italian shot-stopper, Ivan Provedel scored a bullet-like header for Lazio in the final minutes of their game against Atletico to rescue a point for the Serie A side at home.

Sports Brief looks at the highest-scoring goalkeepers in history, including one with over 100 goals.

1. Rogerio Ceni

One of Brazil's greatest-ever goalkeepers, Ceni spent the majority of his career in Sao Paulo. He scored 131 goals in his career as the club's set piece specialist. According to Khel, 61 of his goals came from free kicks. He is retired and currently the manager of his former club.

2. José Luis Chilavert

As reported by Goal, Chilavert scored the most international goals by a goalkeeper (eight) for Paraguay and scored the first-ever hat-trick by a goalie. He scored 67 goals in his career playing across his home country, Argentina, Spain, and France.

3. Jorge Campos

Campos displayed rare versatility in football. He was mainly a goalkeeper but also played as a striker, where he scored 28 of his 46 career goals. The Mexican goalie was also famous for his self-made colourful attires. He currently works as a commentator.

4. Johnny Vegas Fernandez

The Peruvian goalkeeper scored 45 goals throughout his career, mostly from penalties and also from open play. He spent the majority of his career in Peru and played for 15 clubs.

5. René Higuita

One of the most iconic goalkeepers of all time, Higuita scored 43 goals in his career. He is also famously remembered for his acrobatic saves, including the scorpion kick save against England in 1995. He was the goalkeeping coach at Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr for about five years until 2016.

Goalkeepers with UCL goals

Sports Brief also reported on four goalkeepers with Champions League goals after Provedel helped Lazio secure a point in their opening group game against Atletico Madrid.

Nigerian legend, Vincent Enyeama scored against Lyon in 2010, while German goalkeeper, Hans Jörg Bütt scored three goals for different clubs - each one against Juventus.
