Kano Pillars and defending Nigeria Premier Football League champions Remo Stars will meet in a high-stakes relegation battle on Sunday as both sides attempt to halt alarming slides in form, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The match will be played at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano, with kick-off scheduled for 3:30 pm and live coverage on NPFL Live and Propel Sports.
Alhassan Mustapha will referee the encounter, assisted by Jerry Jimmy Pam and Peter Bwamba, while Abdulganiyu Abdulmalik will serve as the fourth official. Remo Stars will be without Fabian Nworie, who is suspended.
Both clubs are entrenched in unfamiliar territory near the foot of the table, separated by just one point after 24 matches. Remo Stars sit 18th with 26 points, while four-time champions Kano Pillars occupy 19th place with 25 points.
The Sky Blues Stars arrive in Kano under intense pressure after a dramatic collapse that has defined their 2025/26 campaign.
A 2–1 defeat to Plateau United on Monday marked their 14th loss of the season, leaving the champions deep in the relegation zone.
The team amassed 71 points to win the title barely nine months ago, losing only nine matches throughout that campaign. This season, they have already surpassed that figure with 14 defeats despite having 14 games still to play.
Their decline has been underlined by defensive vulnerability and blunt attacking output, having conceded 30 goals while scoring just 22.
Remo are winless in their last four league matches, have failed to keep a clean sheet in that run, and have conceded the opening goal in six of their last seven games.
Kano Pillars are also battling to regain stability after a 2–0 loss to Rangers in Enugu last weekend. Technical adviser Muhammed Babaganaru attributed that defeat to tactical indiscipline but insisted the club will escape relegation. He said the team must continue to work hard and remain focused, adding that the battle for survival is far from over.
Recent meetings between the sides offer some encouragement for Remo Stars. They have won four of the last five league encounters, including a 1–0 victory in November 2025, and have scored first in four of those matches.
Pillars have managed just one win in that sequence and have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last six meetings with the champions.
Despite that record, the context of Sunday’s clash is markedly different, with both clubs desperate for points rather than chasing honours.
Once regarded as a benchmark for structure and planning in Nigerian football, Remo Stars must quickly rediscover composure and resilience, while Kano Pillars seek a response at home to revive belief in their survival bid as the relegation fight intensifies.
