Paris 2024: Randy Waldrum has no excuse for benching Oshoala — Fans

Asisat Oshoala Asisat Oshoala

Football-loving fans of Nigeria have questioned Super Falcons coach Randy Waldrum's decision not to play Asisat Oshoala in their Olympic Games group opener against Brazil on Thursday, July 26.

The five-time African Women's Player of the Year watched from the bench as Nigeria lost to the South American giants by a lone goal at Matmut Atlantique Stadium in Bordeaux.

Gabi Nunes scored the only goal of the game in the 37th minute, with an assist from the legendary Marta.

The 38-year-old Brazilian Marta thought she had given her side the lead earlier in the game, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Displeased with Randy Waldrum's decision to bench the former Barcelona striker for the entire 90 minutes, some fans took to social media to criticize the American tactician.

Check out some reactions below

_@Buchi_Laba said: "We lost this match based on a childish mistake and we will do better. Randy Waldrum got no excuses for putting Asisat Oshoala on the bench for 90minutes."

_@adesolagbenga wrote: "Oshoala too old for Waldrum but a 41yr old Marta played 90mins for Brazil"

_@Heisvictor4 said: "He definitely has an issue with oshoala"

_@Yuzeski added: "I don't understand why Waldrum left Oshoala on the bench when she's not injured. The team needed an extra attacking power, which was clearly missing."

_@damilola2i said: "Left Oshoala on the bench for players that can’t figure out which leg they play with. Coach better have a good explanation #NGABRA."

_@iknowAprilmufc added: "I want to believe Oshoala was injured, because nothing justifies her being on the bench the whole time during this game when the people upfront lacked everything basic for an attacker."

The Super Falcons will take on Spain and Japan in their two remaining group encounters.
