Osimhen, Lookman chase 125-year long-standing Serie A record

No African player has won the top scorer award in the Italian topflight for the past 125 years - a record Super Eagles duo of Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman has in sight.

The Napoli frontman, Osimhen, was on target against Salernitana in Serie A on Saturday, January 21 as the Partenopei recorded a 2-0 victory away from home.

Giovani De Lorenzo scored Napoli's opener on the cusp of halftime before Osimhen added the second three minutes after the break.

Osimhen's 48th-minute strike was his 13th of the season in the Serie A in 15 appearances.

The Napoli Starman is still leading the top scorer's race in Italy and his close contender is his fellow countryman Ademola Lookman who has also managed 11 Serie A goals following his latest brace in Atalanta's thrilling 3-3 draw against Juventus in Turin.

The two Nigerian forwards are on course to becoming the first African player to win the golden boot in Serie A for the first time in over a century if they can maintain their prolific goal-scoring form for their respective clubs.

Osimhen is on the verge of equalling his personal best goal record in Serie A.

The ex-Lille attacker managed 14 Serie A goals the whole of last season.

Lookman on the other hand has been touted as the best Serie A signing of the season.

The ex-RB Leipzig man is Atalanta's top scorer across all competitions this season.
