The Super Eagles striker has suffered a poor start to the season, but it seems he is back to his best as Paul Onuachu scored his first goal of the season to help Genk claim a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Oostende.
Onuachu missed Genk’s first three games of the season due to an injury layoff. But since he returned, the former Midtjylland man struggled to find his feet.
Onuachu failed to find the net in six consecutive games for the Limburgers – an anomaly especially after scoring 48 goals in 62 Jupiler League games in the last two seasons.
However, Onuachu ended his barren run when Genk took on Oostende at the Diaz Arena.
Fraser Hornby opened the scoring in the second minute. Genk could have equalized in the 8th minute, but Tresor Ndayishimiye fluffed his penalty kick.
Nonetheless, Onuachu turned up in the 25th minute to save his side’s blushes. The 28-year-old reacted quickest to slot in Angelo Preciado’s cross to make it 1-1.
Both teams reduced their intensity after the break with free chances falling to both sides. But just when Oostende thought they would see out the draw, Daniel Munoz struck for Genk to make sure it ended 2-1 for the Limburgers.
The result leaves Genk in second position on the Belgian league, two points behind Antwerp.
