Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu scored twice, including a late penalty, as Trabzonspor defeated Konyaspor 2-1 in the 2026 Turkish Cup final on Friday night at the Corendon Airlines Park Antalya Stadium to claim the club’s 10th Turkish Cup title.
Onuachu gave Trabzonspor the lead in the 17th minute with a composed finish, and the Black Sea Storm appeared to be cruising towards the trophy before Congolese forward Jackson Muleka equalised for Konyaspor four minutes into the second half.
The match appeared to be heading towards extra time until Onuachu stepped up from the penalty spot in the 78th minute to settle the contest and deny Konyaspor, who also missed a penalty of their own through Enis Bardhi in the 58th minute.
The victory was particularly sweet for Trabzonspor, who had lost the previous season’s final 3-0 to Galatasaray. Head coach Fatih Tekke, appearing in his second Turkish Cup final, claimed his first piece of silverware with the club.
Onuachu, who joined Trabzonspor on a permanent transfer in June 2025, rounded off a remarkable individual season. The Super Eagles striker won the Süper Lig Golden Boot with 22 goals and added four cup goals to his tally as he helped lead Trabzonspor to Friday’s triumph.
Nigerian defender Chibuike Nwaiwu, who joined the club from Wolfsberger in January and made 20 appearances this season, also collected a winner’s medal, with the cup final providing both Nigerians the opportunity to add silverware to an impressive campaign.
The night also marked the end of an era at Trabzonspor. Veteran forward Anthony Nwakaeme, 37, made his final appearance for the club before his contract expires next month. Across two spells at Trabzonspor — from 2018 to 2022 and after rejoining in July 2024 — the Nigeria forward made 193 appearances, contributing 50 goals and 48 assists.
He was a key figure in the club’s 2021/22 Süper Lig title-winning campaign and previously won the Turkish Cup with them in the 2019/20 season and the Turkish Super Cup in 2020/21.
Trabzonspor, who finished third in the Süper Lig this season, will now enter European competition next season from a stronger position following the cup triumph.
