Ofili third in $100,000 Grand Slam Track debut

Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili made her long-awaited debut at the newly launched Grand Slam Track in Miami on Friday, finishing third in the women’s 100m race which was won by Olympic bronze medallist Melissa Jefferson-Wooden, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Jefferson-Wooden clocked a stunning 10.75s (2.4) to take the 100m win in Miami ahead of Tamari Davis in 10.79s, and Ofili finished in an impressive third in a time of 10.94s.

Surprisingly, Olympic 200m champion Gabby Thomas despite clocking her first career sub-11s time in all conditions with 10.97s settled for fourth, edging Jacious Sears in 10.98s.

This appearance marks Ofili’s first outing in the Grand Slam Track, a league hailed as the first truly professional series for track athletes, following her withdrawal from the opening leg in Kingston, Jamaica earlier this month.

The competition brings together 96 of the world’s top talents across a three-day face-off, with a $100,000 top prize on offer in each event.

Ofili, 22, will hope to stake more claims in the 200m event.

The second leg of the slam will be followed by another on May 30 to June 1 at Franklin Field in Philadelphia while the last leg is slated for June 27-29 at UCLA’s Drake Stadium in Los Angeles.

The winner of each race group will take home $100,000 in prize money, and the 8th-place competitor will earn $10,000. Grand Slam Track has a total of $12.6m in prize money awarded across the slams each year in addition to the base compensation paid to racers and appearance fees paid to challengers.
