With a statement on their official website, Zambia Super League giants Zanaco FC have confirmed the signing of Nigerian forward Austine Chigozie Iheanacho.

Iheanacho joins the Bankers as a free agent, having been last associated with Ahli Khartoum SC of Sudan.

The former Shebab Nasri striker has inked a one-year deal that will keep him at Zanaco until 2023.

The statement reads in part: “We are pleased to announce the signing of Nigerian striker Austine Chigozie Iheanacho.

“The Nigerian striker arrives to boost our attack following recent departures in that department. Iheanancho has spent most of his football career in Sudan, where he played for Ayl Arab, Shebab Nasri, Ahli Merowe, and Hilal Fasher.”

Zanaco Football Club Chief Executive Officer Mr. Modest Hamalabbi expressed the club’s delight at welcoming Iheanacho to the seven-time Zambian Super League champions.

Mr. Hamalabbi said, “With the coming of Austine, given his experience and past glory in the Sudanese league, we believe he will add value to the club.”

The Nigerian connection: Iheanacho and Amuneke
Iheanacho joins Zanaco only a few days after the Bankers appointed Super Eagles hero Emmanuel Amunike as a consultant for the technical bench.

The 1994 Africa Cup of Nations winner will look to get the best out of Iheanacho.

Iheanacho has also vowed to give his all to make his stay at Zanaco a success.

The Nigerian striker said, “I’m so grateful to be in Zambia and Zanaco. I am so happy. I have watched the Zambian Super League on DSTV, mostly Zanaco and Red Arrows.

“I came here to work and I will deliver what I came for and as a striker I need to score goals.”

Zanaco have not had a great start to the 2022/2023 league season. The Bankers sit in 12th position on the Super League table after two wins and three losses in five matches.
