Some football-loving fans in Nigeria have taken to social media to celebrate football legend Nwankwo Kanu on his 46th birthday.

Kanu is one of the best strikers Nigeria has ever seen and arguably one of the best footballers in African history.

Kanu featured for the national team at the Under 17 level, Under 23 level, and the senior national team, Super Eagles.

He netted 5 goals in 6 matches at the U17 level and was instrumental to Nigeria's success at the 1993 U17 FIFA World Cup in Japan.

At the U23 level, he captained the famous Dream Team to glory at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, USA.

His brilliance and technique helped Nigeria to edge out world football powerhouse, Brazil in the semi-final stage as he scored twice to propel Nigeria to the finals.

Kanu won 86 caps and scored 13 goals for Nigeria and was the joint most capped Nigerian player of all-time alongside Muda Lawal, until Joseph Yobo surpassed that feat in 2012.

At the club level, Kanu featured for some of the prestigious clubs in Europe and in some of the best leagues.

He played for Ajax Amsterdam in the Dutch Eredivisie where he won the Champions League in 1995.

Kanu joined Serie A giants Inter Milan the following season for a fee around the region of $4.7m. Sadly, however, his spell at Inter was marred by a heart defect.

He later moved to the Premier League which turned out to be the highlight of his career. Kanu had a bright career with the Gunners as he scored some important goals for Arsene Wenger's side.

He was a key member of the famous "Invincibles", the Arsenal side that finished the 2003–04 season of the Premier League undefeated.

Kanu scored 30 goals for The Gunners in 119 appearances winning the Premier League and the FA Cup.

The legend also had spells with English clubs West Bromwich Albion and Portsmouth.
