Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has answered the big question on most Nigerians’ minds after talisman Victor Osimhen was substituted against the Democratic Republic of Congo in the crucial FIFA World Cup playoff final.
The Galatasaray star man was withdrawn at halftime and was replaced by Sevilla forward Akor Adams as DR Congo defeated the Super Eagles in a penalty shootout, ending Nigeria's World Cup dreams.
The 90 minutes of regulation time ended in a 1-1 draw after Mechak Elia cancelled out Frank Onyeka's early goal for Nigeria.
Despite failing to qualify Nigeria for the global showpiece, Eric Chelle remains undefeated with the Super Eagles in 11 matches.
The Malian tactician was asked why he subbed off the 26-year-old at halftime while he made his way out of the stadium, and he simply answered, “He has an injury.”
The defeat means Nigeria has now failed to qualify for two consecutive FIFA World Cup tournaments after missing out on the last edition to Ghana in the doubleheader playoffs.
