Nigeria’s World Cup record-maker reveals quest to inspire and empower

In a captivating interview ahead of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023, Super Falcons and Barcelona striker, Asisat Oshoala, has revealed how football has left a profound impact on her life and perspective.

With passion and enthusiasm, Oshoala expressed, “Football means everything to me because through it, I can express myself. It has shaped my life, allowing me to see the world through different eyes.”

Starting her football journey at just 15 with the Nigerian league club, Robo, she has come a long way. Having played in Nigeria, England, and the People’s Republic of China before joining FC Barcelona in 2019, her journey has been remarkable.

“Through football, I’ve learned to embrace cultural differences, meet people from diverse backgrounds, and understand their way of life. It has transformed the way I see my own surroundings. Things I never thought about before have become significant aspects of my life today,” she added.

As an influential figure for young girls who love football, Oshoala is fully aware of the responsibility she holds.

“Through football, I see the world with different eyes. I strive to make the most of every moment on the field, inspiring others and supporting the younger generation. Considering my background, religion, family, and other factors, I represent hope for many girls.”

Her remarkable journey from her hometown football field in Ikorodu to the grand stage of the FIFA Women’s World Cup has provided the five-time Women’s Footballer of the Year (2014, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2022) with countless experiences of football’s unifying power.

“Football has the magical ability to bring people from all corners of the world together, igniting an instant connection and zest for life,” Oshoala remarked proudly.

Oshoala’s achievements include three Spanish championships and two UEFA Women’s Champions League titles.

Looking beyond the game, she reflects on the profound lessons football can offer to everyday life.

“The sport teaches us invaluable lessons – even strangers can treat each other with kindness and support without knowing one another. Football, in its own extraordinary way, unites the world and holds the potential to bring peace to our planet,” she concluded passionately.

Oshoala became the first Nigerian (male or female) to score at three different World Cups when she netted the Super Falcons’ winner in the 3-2 victory over Australia on Thursday.
