Nigeria football chief explains reason for NFF’s delay in naming next Super Eagles coach

The coaching situation of Nigeria's national football team, the Super Eagles, remains a prominent and widely discussed topic within the country's footballing community.

Since the departure of former manager, Jose Peseiro, after the expiration of his contract, the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finalists have been without a permanent coach. Despite the imminent 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification series, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has yet to announce a successor, causing frustration among fans and stakeholders.

However, while the NFF continues to stall over the appointment of the next Super Eagles coach, a Nigerian football stakeholder has detailed the reason for the slow recruitment process regarding naming a coach for the national team.

In an interview reported by Score Nigeria, a prominent Nigerian football official who opted to speak anonymously, explained that the NFF are yet to appoint a new coach for the Super Eagles due to a desire for a collective decision.

"The NFF president could unilaterally decide on the next coach of the Super Eagles, but he prefers a decision that involves as many stakeholders as possible," the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, stated.

Since the coaching position was declared vacant, there have been daily discussions and consultations on who should fill the role. It is a meticulous process, hence the delay."

These remarks from the Nigerian football official seem aimed at calming the swirling and unsettling discussions about appointing a suitable coach for the Super Eagles.
