The start of the highly anticipated Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) 2023/24 season has experienced yet another postponement, Soccernet.ng reports.

The NPFL Board officially announced this delay in a statement that has left the Nigerian football community awaiting a new kickoff date.

Through a press release, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the NPFL, Davidson Owumi, disclosed that the decision to postpone the season’s start was reached following comprehensive consultations with various stakeholders.

Part of the statement reads: “The Board of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) wish to inform you that the scheduled kickoff for the 2023/24 season has been put on hold, and a new date will be communicated to you. This is due to the exigencies connected to the sponsorship of the League.

“Note, therefore, that there will be no flag-off game this Saturday, September 9, as originally planned.”

Initially, everything was set for the kickoff event in Ibadan on the scheduled date of Saturday, September 9.

However, after careful consideration, it became evident that the logistical challenges of having the NPFL Chairman and Clubs’ leadership travel from Ibadan to Uyo were substantial and needed to be addressed.

The NPFL administration has effectively communicated this postponement to all clubs involved in the league. Unfortunately, some clubs had already begun preparations for the originally planned kickoff date of September 9.

It is essential to highlight that before settling on the September start date, the NPFL campaign was initially scheduled to commence on August 26.

According to reports, the new NPFL date will be communicated to the Nigerian football community as things unfold.
