The Super Eagles of Nigeria began their 2023 AFCON qualifiers campaign with a 2-1 victory against Sierra Leone at the MKO Stadium in Abuja ending a five-game winless run.

The visitors hit the front in the 11th minute and looked more promising to add another by hitting the woodwork minutes later.

But the Eagles responded promptly through Alex Iwobi's well-placed strike finding the bottom right corner.

Victor Osimhen scored in the 41st minute to secure a 2-1 victory for the three times African champions.

The second 45 minutes produced no goal.

Despite the win, the quality of the MKO Stadium pitch was the biggest talking point among some sections of the fans, with many of them lashing out at the poor quality of the turf.
