NFF line up two local coaches to replace Eric Chelle should he fail to deliver the World Cup ticket

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is reportedly considering two local coaches as possible replacements for Eric Chelle ahead of the 2025 African Cup of Nations, should Nigeria fail to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Super Eagles’ World Cup fate will most likely be known after their last home clash against Benin Republic on Tuesday, October 14.

Despite managing two wins and two draws in the qualifiers—a record far better than his predecessors who began the World Cup campaign—Eric Chelle will most likely be the scapegoat should Nigeria fail to qualify for back-to-back World Cups.

According to SCORENigeria, Augustine Eguavoen will be in line to take over the team again for the fifth time.

The former Super Eagles defender will be assisted by former Flying Eagles coach Ladan Bosso.

“The coaching combination being proposed is Eguavoen to be assisted by (Ladan) Bosso,” a close source informed SCORENigeria under conditions of anonymity.

However, it remains unclear if the duo will be leading the team on a temporary or permanent basis.

It must be noted that Eric Chelle is yet to lose a game with the main Super Eagles team since taking over the reins of the team in January this year.

The 47-year-old's low point came when he led the Super Eagles B team to the African Nations Championship, where Nigeria lost their opening group matches to Senegal and Sudan and crashed out of the competition.
