NFF eulogises Samuel Okwaraji 35 years on

The Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) has paid tribute to the late Samuel Okwaraji 35 years after his passing.

The late Super Eagles hero collapsed and died during Nigeria's World Cup qualifier match against Angola at the National Stadium in Lagos on August 12, 1989.

According to medical reports, the midfielder died from congestive heart failure.

Five other persons also lost their lives on that tragic day due to the stampede caused by the 40,000 fans that thronged the stadium to cheer on the Super Eagles.

In a tweeted statement, the NFF wrote:

"It's 12th August again, and we remember the Patriotic Samuel Sochukwuma Okwaraji who died on this day in 1989. Forever in our hearts."

The Law graduate-turned-footballer died at age 25. He was playing with Belgian club K. Berchem Sport at the time of his death.
