A Manchester United fan was arrested at Wembley Stadium after wearing an offensive shirt mocking the Hillsborough disaster victims ahead of the FA Cup final.

Manchester United lost to their cross-town rivals Manchester City thanks to two Ilkay Gundogan volleys on June 3, but the win was slightly punctured by the antics of the fan.

The fan was pictured wearing a United jersey with the number 97 and the words 'not enough' printed on it. As Give Me Sports reports, this was construed as a direct sickening mock of the victims of the 1989 Hillsborough victims.

The Hillsborough disaster remains one of the most calamitous sports-related incidents in history. 97 Liverpool fans lost their lives during their FA Cup semifinal match against Nottingham Forrest. A crash in the stadium occasioned by a lapse in crowd control saw fans trapped under the rubble leading to the immense loss of lives as captured by Britannica.

Images of the fan dining the shirt quickly went viral, with Liverpool fan accounts calling for action. The Met Police responded swiftly and sent an update through their Twitter handles that the fan had been taken into custody.

"#ARREST | We are aware of this and have worked proactively with officials at Wembley Stadium to identify the individual. He has been arrested on suspicion of a public order offence and taken into custody."

A section of social media users online jumped to the defence of the fan, claiming that he was mocking Liverpool's inability to win the Premier League title in the 2018/2019 season despite clocking 97 points. It is the highest tally a runners up had had in the league. The eventual champions. Manchetser City, had 98 points.
