Ademola Lookman is on the brink of becoming the only Nigerian player to reach the UEFA Champions League semi-final this season as Atletico Madrid host Barcelona in the decisive second leg of their quarter-final clash at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano today.

Diego Simeone’s side hold a two-goal advantage heading into the encounter, following an impressive first-leg victory at Camp Nou where goals from Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth secured a comfortable win after Barcelona were reduced to 10 men late in the first half.

For Nigerian fans, attention will centre on Lookman, the Super Eagles forward has been a key figure since his move to Atletico, contributing five goals and three assists in 16 appearances for the Spanish side.

With La Liga slipping from their grasp and Barcelona leading the title race, the Champions League represents Atletico’s most realistic path to silverware this season, alongside the Copa del Rey, where they have already overcome the Catalan club to reach the final.

Despite a recent dip in form, including a defeat to Sevilla at the weekend in a match where Simeone rotated heavily, Atletico remain formidable at home. They had previously won six consecutive matches at the Metropolitano and have failed to score just once on home soil all season.

Lookman is expected to feature prominently in attack, likely partnering Antoine Griezmann, with his pace and direct running seen as a potential threat against Barcelona’s high defensive line.

His ability to exploit spaces in transition could prove decisive against a side expected to dominate possession.

Hansi Flick side face an uphill task after the first-leg setback, which was compounded by Pau Cubarsi’s dismissal. However, they arrive in Madrid boosted by a commanding 4-1 victory over Espanyol, a match in which teenage star Lamine Yamal reached 100 La Liga appearances and marked the occasion with a goal and two assists.

The Catalan side currently sit comfortably at the top of La Liga, nine points clear of Real Madrid, but their focus now shifts to overturning the deficit and keeping their European ambitions alive.

While Barcelona have beaten Atletico away from home in recent meetings, memories of a heavy Copa del Rey defeat earlier this year may weigh on their confidence. They must deliver a clinical performance to stand any chance of staging a comeback.

For Lookman, the stage is set to further underline his growing influence in Spanish football, with a place in the Champions League semi-finals within touching distance.
