Lookman returns as Rojiblancos silence Camp Nou

Ademola Lookman returned to action for Atlético Madrid as they secured a commanding 2-0 victory over FC Barcelona in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final at Camp Nou.

Goals from Julián Alvarez just before half-time and substitute Alexander Sørloth in the 70th minute handed the visitors a crucial advantage ahead of the return leg, as Diego Simeone’s side claimed a rare win at the Catalan ground.

Lookman, who missed the sides’ previous league meeting, was restored to the starting line-up and showed early intent in a lively opening spell.

The Nigerian forward had his first involvement in the seventh minute when his right-footed effort from the left side of the box was blocked after being set up by Alvarez.

He was also involved defensively and in build-up play, though he conceded a handball midway through the first half.

The game began at a frantic pace, with both sides exchanging early chances, but it was Barcelona who initially dominated possession. However, Atlético remained organised, frequently dropping deep and looking to exploit spaces behind the hosts’ high defensive line.

The turning point arrived just before the break when Barcelona were reduced to 10 men following Pau Cubarsí’s red card for a professional foul. From the resulting set-piece, Alvarez delivered a precise finish to give the visitors the lead and silence the home crowd.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Barcelona pushed forward after the interval, with Marcus Rashford going close and later striking the crossbar from a free-kick. Dani Olmo also came close to equalising, but Atlético’s defensive discipline ensured they held firm under sustained pressure.

Lookman’s contribution came to an end on the hour mark when he was replaced by Sørloth, a change that proved decisive. The Norwegian striker later sealed the win with a composed finish after a swift counter-attack, doubling Atlético’s advantage and leaving Barcelona with a mountain to climb.

In his 60-minute outing, Lookman recorded one shot, one key pass and completed 13 of his 14 passes, maintaining a 93 per cent accuracy rate.

He also completed two successful dribbles and contributed defensively with two recoveries, showing glimpses of his attacking threat despite not registering a goal involvement.

The result ended Barcelona’s 10-game unbeaten run across all competitions and marked Atlético’s first victory at Camp Nou since 2006, putting them firmly in control of the tie ahead of the second leg.
