Julius Aghahowa proffers solution to Paul Onuachu’s poor goal record for Nigeria

The former goal-king believes the prolific Genk star should be an integral part of the Super Eagles attack

Paul Onuachu will score loads of goals for the Super Eagles if the team is set up to provide him with an endless supply of passes, says former Wigan striker Julius Aghahowa.

Onuachu is a proven finisher in front of goal, with the gangling forward replicating in Belgium the goalscoring streak that made him a household name in Denmark.

The 26-year-old centre-forward has monopolised the top of the First Division A’s goalscorer’s chart with 22 goals in 24 league matches.

Despite boasting a reputation of scoring 111 career club goals and another 28 assists, Onuachu has managed just one goal in seven appearances for the Nigeria national team.

But Aghahowa has decided to blame head coach Gernot Rohr’s tactics and not the Genk star for the striker’s low scoring return for the three-time African champions.

In a chat with Brila FM, Aghahowa explained how the Super Eagles could get the best out of Onuachu.

“I think the pattern of the Super Eagles doesn’t favour him and the question we need to ask is do we want to score goals or just play football?” the former Nigerian striker said.

“If we (Nigeria) want to score goals, then we need to start feeding him with the ball.”

Onuachu made his Super Eagles debut on March 22, 2019, and has earned seven caps for Nigeria.

The ex-Midtjylland ace’s only goal arrived as a stunning 25-yard strike in just the second minute of Nigeria’s friendly 1-0 win over Egypt in 2019.

Onuachu has never gone the whole distance with the Super Eagles.
