The search for a new head coach to replace Finidi George has taken an interesting twist.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is yet to secure the signature of a suitable candidate who will replace the former international, who has made a sensational return to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) after signing for Rivers United last week.

Finidi stepped down from his role following the NFF's decision to appoint a foreign technical adviser for the team after the disappointing results in the World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic.

In the latest development, former Super Eagles head coach José Peseiro has been linked with a surprise return to the team.

Gerald Baloyi, a representative for Vodia Sports International Management, has confirmed that Peseiro is in talks to return to the Super Eagles.

“Yes, Vodia Sports International Management offered Jose Peseiro to Sundowns, though the Nigerian national teams are interested in bringing him over again,” Baloyi told KickOff.

The 63-year-old left the role last February after guiding the Super Eagles to the finals of the 2023 African Cup of Nations.

Despite guiding the team to their first final since 2013, when Nigeria last won the AFCON, the Portuguese gaffer could not reach an agreement with the NFF over a possible extension.

Peseiro's previous spell with the Super Eagles saw him win 11 out of the 22 games he played, as per Sofascore
