Iwobi backs Brahim Díaz following heartbreak at AFCON final

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has sent a message of consolation to Morocco’s Brahim Díaz following his missed penalty at the Africa Cup of Nations final.

The Real Madrid forward missed a golden opportunity to end Morocco’s 50-year wait for an AFCON title after his Panenka-style spot kick was saved by Édouard Mendy in stoppage time.

The match went into extra time, where Papa Gueye scored the decisive goal to seal Senegal’s second AFCON title.

Speaking in his AFCON Diaries, Iwobi gave a shout-out to Díaz, whom he believes could have become a national hero.

“A shout-out to Brahim Díaz. He will be going through a lot.

“I mean, to take the penalty the way he did — if he scored, he would have been a hero. It’s just the fact that he didn’t.

“Please, it is football, allow him. My message to Díaz is that what is done is done. He had a good tournament. Do your thing at your club.”

Despite the disappointment, Díaz finished the tournament as the Golden Boot winner, scoring five goals in seven games for the Atlas Lions.
