I was coach of Tanzania, why must I come back to assist Rohr – Amuneke declares

Emmanuel Amuneke has condemned the idea for him to become an assistant to Gernot Rohr Emmanuel Amuneke has condemned the idea for him to become an assistant to Gernot Rohr

Former Nigeria international Emmanuel Amuneke has decried the possible idea of him becoming an assistant to Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr, saying it is belittling.

The former winger who became a coach has managed football teams in Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Egypt, Tanzania and Nigeria.

Emmanuel Amuneke made history when he guided Tanzania to the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time since 1980 after a 3-0 win over Uganda, but the Taifa Stars crashed out of the tournament in the group stages before he resigned.

The achievement also saw him the second Nigerian coach, after late Stephen Keshi (with Togo and Nigeria), to guide a country to the biennial continental showpiece.

And following the Super Eagles’ poor performances recently, there are speculations in some quarters that the 49-year-old should be employed to assist Gernot Rohr.

Amuneke responded, as cited by Brila Sports:

“Rohr is the coach of Nigeria. I was once the coach of Tanzania; not the youth team so why must I come back to assist Rohr.“Why are we trying to belittle ourselves.”

Meanwhile, former Nigeria international Daniel Amokachi has expressed huge disappointment at the Nigerian Football Federation for inserting a staggering $2million (about N794million) as compensation clause in the contract of Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr.

The Franco-German tactician who assumed position as Super Eagles coach in 2016 was given contract extension in 2020.

According to Amokachi, ex-internationals Sunday Oliseh and Emmanuel Amuneke, were not given time to turn things around for the team because there were Nigerians.
