Chelsea attacker, Nicolas Jackson, has apologised to the club, his teammates and fans after being sent off in the Blues 3-1 defeat to Flamengo in their second group game in the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup in the US.
Jackson started the game from the bench and was introduced in the 63rd in the place of Liam Delap.
He was brought in to rescue the Blues who were already 2-1 down but the Ivorian ended up adding insult to injury.
Pedro Neto put the Premier League side in front in Philadelphia, before the Brazilian side fought back to score twice after the break through Bruno Henrique and Danilo.
Jackson was shown a straight red card for a nasty tackle and will be banned for one game.
The Ivorian nearly cost Enzo Maresca’s side a place in the Champions League when he received an unnecessary red card during a crucial match against Newcastle United in the Premier League last season.
After yesterday’s encounter, the former Villareal man took to social media, as reported by Fabrizio Romano, to tender an apology for his action.
“I want to say sorry. To the club, the staff, my teammates, and all the fans watching, I let you down,” he said.
“Another red card and honestly, I’m so angry at myself. I work hard every day to help the team not to put us in this kind of situation. I still don’t fully understand how it happened.
“But one thing is clear: it wasn’t intentional. Just a football moment that went the wrong way. No excuses. I take full responsibility.
“I’ll reflect, I’ll grow, and I’ll come back stronger for the badge and for everyone who believes in me. Sorry. Sorry. Sorry”.
Chelsea defeated Los Angeles 2-0 in their opening group game and were hoping to stay top of the group with a win over Flamengo.
However, the Brazilians now occupy top of the group with two wins in two matches, while the UEFA Conference League winners are second with 3 points.
Maresca’s side must now win their next and final Group D game against African side, Esperance of Tunisia to book a place in the round of 16.
