'I had to sell water on the streets of Lagos to survive' – Osimhen on early struggles in life

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen has recounted his early struggles in life growing up as a lad.

The 23-year-old is an epitome of sports personalities who rose to stardom from a very poor background.

Osimhen, who grew up around Olusosun in the Ojota area of Lagos narrated how he lost his mother at a very young age and how his dad also lost his job three months after his mother's passing.

"I was born and brought up in Lagos. I grew up in Olusosun, an area of Lagos State. My humble beginning was really tough for me. I lost my mom when I was a very young boy, and three months later, I lost my father, he lost his job.

The ex-Lille attacker also narrated how he struggled with his elder siblings to make ends meet.

"It was really tough; where I came from, nothing is promised. No one would tell you they believe in you, and I believed football was the only hope to survive and live a better life like we are living now."

This was disclosed in a video clip shared by Naija footballers via its handle on the microblogging app, Instagram.

Osimhen came into the limelight following his staggering performance at the 2015 U-17 FIFA World Cup in Chile, where he netted 10 goals in 7 matches for the Golden Eaglets.

After an impressive outing at the tournament, Osimhen agreed on a pre-contract with Bundesliga side Wolfsburg, before joining the club officially in January 2017.

Osimhen later joined French club Lille in 2019, where he 18 goals in 38 as per Goal appearances to draw interest from Napoli the following season.

In the summer of 2020, the Naples-based club signed the Nigerian international for a club-record fee of €70m plus a potential €10m as add-ons.
