Werder Bremen forward Victor Boniface told journalists he doesn’t care what the media reports about him following his failed move to Italian giants AC Milan.
The striker, who is currently on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, told reporters they can believe whatever they read in the media when asked if the move failed due to fitness concerns.
Recall that Boniface, who had a stellar season under former coach Xabi Alonso in his first campaign, struggled to replicate his form in the just-ended season due to injuries.
This led to a potential move to Milan, which collapsed at the last hour, with many believing it was due to his injury record.
At the press conference following his unveiling, he told journalists: “Who spoke about my fitness? Whatever you want to believe in the media, you can believe. That is not on me. So if the media say I am a good boy, you believe that. If they say I am a bad boy, you believe that. Whatever they say in the media is on them. I don’t care.”
“If my body is not 100%, I will be in the hospital. I won’t be here talking to you,” he said.
According to German outlet BILD, Boniface was subjected to four different medicals in Italy before his move to AC Milan eventually fell through.
Milan decided to pull out of the deal for the Bayer Leverkusen striker due to concerns over his fitness and medical history.
The Nigerian international was in Italy for medicals with the Rossoneri over the weekend but has since returned to Germany, with reports that Milan remained uncertain over a decision to sign him.
Milan sporting director Igli Tare told the press on Saturday: “We knew that he had problems in the past. We are evaluating everything as planned with regards to the health and fitness of the player. His qualities are undoubted. We are just trying to make the right decision for this situation.”
It was later confirmed that the deal fell through, despite Milan having a full agreement in place with Leverkusen for his transfer, consisting of a €5m loan fee and a €24m option to buy at a later date.
