I chose Ajax over PL - Bassey

Super Eagles defender, Calvin Bassey has revealed that he made a difficult choice by moving to the Dutch Eredivisie instead of the Premier League.

The 22-year-old joined the Eredivisie champions from Glasgow Rangers last month at a club-record fee for a defender.

The ex-Leicester City academy product signed a five-year deal with Ajax for a reported fee of £22.7m including add-ons, making him the most expensive Nigerian defender in history.

Prior to joining Ajax, Bassey was been courted by a number of top clubs in Europe, including Premier League outfit, Brighton and Hove Albion, and German Champions, Bayern Munich.

Speaking in an interview with Daily Record, the Nigerian international disclosed that moving to the Premier League could have been the ideal option owing to the fact that he is familiar with the terrain and understands the language.

The versatile defender explained that his decision to join Ajax was informed by the club's readiness to sign him.

“Returning to England might have been the safest option for me and of course, I know the language and the Premier League is a great competition. But it did not outweigh my desire to move to Ajax, he told Daily Record as per The PUNCH.

“I didn’t count on anything. Many things can go wrong in transfers and there was interest from other clubs too. But when I saw how hard Ajax was working to sign me, I got really excited.

“I discussed it with my family and tried to keep calm even though I was very excited about the move because it’s only completed when everything is signed.

Bassey had a nightmare start to his campaign at Ajax. The defender was sent off on his debut after just 17 minutes of action.
