I am happy for Kalu - Rohr

Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr has expressed his joy at seeing Bordeaux forward Samuel Kalu back in action and scoring.

The Nigeria international scored a spectacular goal in the 85th minute to help Bordeaux secure a point in a thrilling 3-3 draw with Montpellier in the Ligue 1 game on Wednesday.Kalu, who was brought on as a substitute, showed great skills to beat three defenders before firing the ball into the back of the net to equalise for Bordeaux with just five minutes to the end of the game.

The strike was the 24-year-old first goal of the season following some horrid time at the beginning of the campaign.Kalu collapsed on the pitch after just 12 minutes in Bordeaux’s second league game of the season against Marseille.

Though he was cleared to return to the pitch just days after he was taken to the hospital but the Nigerian has struggled to make himself a regular at the Matmut Atlantique since his return.Speaking with Web Girondins, Rohr, who was a former player and coach of the club, said he was delighted to have seen Kalu scored.

“These last two results are very positive, and I hope that this will be a trend that will last. What worries me a bit are the goals conceded. With 16 goals conceded, it’s the worst defence in Ligue 1, and it’s huge despite a goalkeeper who is one of the best in Ligue 1.“

This is where the new staff will have to work. Scoring three nice goals is encouraging.“Personally, I was very happy for Kalu because I have him with Nigeria. This will give him confidence. “It’s a good thing for the Bordeaux to have this kind of attacker, but we absolutely have to strengthen the defence.”
