Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro has defended Emmanuel Dennis following his penalty miss against Portugal.

The Super Eagles were humbled 4-0 by Selecao at the Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon on Thursday, November 17.

The 25-year-old had a glorious opportunity to pull a goal back for the Super Eagles when the team was trailing by Bruno Fernandes' first-half brace.

But the Nottingham Forest striker squandered the 80th-minute penalty by hitting the woodwork.

The Selecao would later extend the lead to 4-0 courtesy of goals from Gonçalo Ramos and João Mário.

Speaking in a post-match reaction, the Super Eagles gaffer shielded the ex-Watford striker noting that it is not a new thing for a player to miss a penalty

“It is nothing for a player to miss a penalty and I won't blame Dennis for missing it against Portugal. He has my protection.”

Jose Peseiro remains winless in international friendlies since taking over as head coach of the Super Eagles in May.

The 62-year-old has lost to Mexico, Ecuador, Algeria, Costa Rica and Portugal.
