Genk cries foul as Dessers exit looms

KRC Genk believes Cyriel Dessers is trying to engineer a move away from the club following his recent meeting with officials of FC Copenhagen on Tuesday, July 26.

According to reports, the 27-year-old met with the manager of FC Copenhagen, Jess Thorup, and the club's Sporting Director, Peter Christiansen for talks on a possible transfer.

Dessers have made his intentions to exit the club clear as he wants a club where he will be guaranteed a place in the starting eleven.

The Nigerian international spent the previous season on loan at Feyenoord where he had a remarkable season after scoring 10 goals in the Conference League to be crowned top scorer.

He returned to Genk this summer after Feyenoord couldn't afford his asking price of €4m to tie him down a permanent deal.

Dessers have been linked with several clubs with recent reports indicating that he is close to joining newly promoted Serie A side Cremonese.

With an official offer yet to be submitted by his suitors, Genk believes the forward decided to orchestrate his way out of the club by meeting with officials of FC Copenhagen.

“Cyriel’s broker Stijn Francis had reported that there was interest from FC Copenhagen, but the (Danish) club has not informed us at all,” Genk's Sporting Director said as per Het Belang Van Limburg.

“We don’t think this is the right course of action.”

Dessers scored in Genk's 3-2 defeat to Club Brugge on Sunday in what was their first game in the 2022/2023 Pro League season.
