Galaxies cancel friendly to focus on Eagles clash

Ahead of the second leg clash of their final 2023 African Nations Championship qualifier against Nigeria on Saturday, the Ghana Football Association announced that Black Galaxies friendly match against FC Samartex has been cancelled.

The GFA made the announcement on their Twitter handle.

According to the body, the decision to cancel the friendly was to enable the coach Annor Walker’s side focus on their all-important clash against Nigeria at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on Saturday.

Ghana hold a 2-0 advantage from the first leg and will hope to get the job done when they travel to Nigeria for the second leg.

According to the federation, the Black Galaxies will travel to Abuja on Friday ahead of the return leg of the CHAN qualifier.

The Galaxies were initially scheduled to face the newly promoted Ghana Premier League side at the Cape Coast stadium on Thursday.

The game would have been the team’s last friendly match in Cape Coast, having played King Faisal in another warm-up game, before travelling to Accra on Thursday for the trip to Abuja.

“The Black Galaxies friendly match against FC Samartex 1996 has been cancelled. The team will continue with preparations for their return encounter against the Super Eagles of Nigeria in Abuja,” GFA tweeted.

Should Salisu Yusuf’s men fail to overturn the result in Abuja, it would be the second time in six months that Ghana would stop Nigeria from taking part in major football competitions after the Black Stars denied the Super Eagles a chance to participate at the Qatar 2022 World Cup earlier this year.
