From Kanu to Osimhen: Nigeria’s all-time top scorers in the UEFA Champions League

The UEFA Champions League returns this week with some mouthwatering fixtures.

From a Nigerian perspective, Ademola Lookman and his Atletico Madrid side travel to VfB Stuttgart on Tuesday, October 20 (8pm Nigerian time), before Victor Osimhen and Galatasaray visit Lille on Wednesday, October 21 (5:45pm).

As matchday three beckons, MyNigeria puts the spotlight on the Nigerian players with the most Champions League goals in history.

Victor Osimhen, 16 goals (Lille, Napoli, Galatasaray)

The Galatasaray talisman is Nigeria’s all-time leading scorer in the competition. His seven goals in 2025/26 are the most by a Nigerian in a single campaign, including his first Champions League hat-trick, a header and two penalties in a 3-0 win away to Ajax.

The 27-year-old is yet to score in this season’s competition. He missed matchday one, a 3-1 defeat away to Sporting CP, with a groin injury, and was kept quiet by Barcelona on matchday two. It remains to be seen what he has up his sleeves against his former club Lille.

Obafemi Martins, 9 goals (Inter, Wolfsburg, Rubin Kazan)

The former striker scored nine Champions League goals in 34 appearances for Inter Milan, Wolfsburg and Rubin Kazan. Only Osimhen has scored more, but his spot is under threat. Lookman is now level with him and could overtake him as early as Tuesday night.

Ademola Lookman, 9 goals (Leipzig, Atalanta, Atlético Madrid)

Lookman’s 79th-minute goal off the bench against Manchester United on matchday two took him from eight to nine goals, level with Martins in joint second. He has scored for RB Leipzig, Atalanta and Atlético, and has made over 20 Champions League appearances.

Victor Ikpeba, 7 goals (Monaco)

The former Nigerian striker netted seven Champions League goals for Ligue 1 side AS Monaco.

Nwankwo Kanu, 5 goals (Ajax, Arsenal)

Kanu won the competition with Ajax in 1995, alongside Finidi George, and scored five goals in his spell at Ajax and Arsenal. He holds the record for most Champions League appearances by a Nigerian, with 60.

Yakubu Aiyegbeni, 5 goals (Maccabi Haifa)

The former Everton striker also scored five goals, for Israeli side Maccabi Haifa. He and Osimhen are the only Nigerians to score a Champions League hat-trick.
