Former Wimbledon star, John Fashanu, has saluted the Super Eagles for their perfect start to the Qatar 2020 World Cup qualifiers, following their 2-1 win against Cape Verde on Tuesday.

The victory against the Blue Sharks at the Estadio Municipal Aderito Sena, Mindelo means Gernot Rohr’s side made it successive victories to keep their World Cup dreams alive.

The Eagles defeated Liberia 2-0 at The Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos in their opening game and now sit comfortably at the top of Group C with maximum six points.

Speaking with Saturday PUNCH, Fashanu said, “The wins against Liberia and Cape Verde are two great results for Nigeria and now the players should be very confident and should be joyous now.

“This Nigeria team should feel invincible now because they were able to get two great results without some of their key players and any player who comes in back to the team is just like an icing on the cake to make it sweeter.

“Right now, anything can happen and the morale is high with the World Cup proper in sight once they build on these performances.”The former Aston Villa striker also backed vice-captain, William Troost-Ekong’s claims that it was unfair not having some players available for the games following their club’s decision not to release them.

He added, “It is very unfair not to allow players to represent their countries; they should be released to represent their countries wherever they go. Otherwise, the players will feel like they are thrashed.“This has never been heard of before, that clubs will stop players from representing their countries because of a virus.”
