Ex-Super Eagles striker Anichebe set to complete takeover of English club

Former Super Eagles striker Victor Anichebe is reportedly on the verge of completing a takeover of EFL League One club Bromley as he prepares to make his first major move into football club ownership.

According to talkSPORT, the former Everton forward is leading a wealthy African consortium currently in advanced negotiations to acquire the Ravens.

Anichebe in contact with Bromley owner

Anichebe, 38, is reported to be holding talks with Bromley owner Robin Stanton-Gleaves, with both parties working towards finalising an agreement.

The proposed takeover comes at a difficult period for Bromley, who have struggled to adjust to life in League One despite enjoying a remarkable rise through the English football pyramid.

The South London outfit secured promotion from the National League to League Two in 2024 before earning another promotion to League One at the end of last season.

Bromley currently bottom in League One

However, their first campaign in the third tier has been far from impressive, with the club currently occupying the bottom position in the league table.

Bromley have managed just nine points from their opening 13 matches and possess the division’s worst goal difference of minus 20.

Their poor start to the season also resulted in the dismissal of manager Andy Woodman on October 22, bringing an end to his five-and-a-half-year spell in charge.

Bromley have subsequently failed to win any of their three matches since his departure, leaving the club facing an early battle to avoid relegation.

Anichebe’s led consortium could signal new beginning for Bromley

Anichebe’s potential arrival could therefore mark the beginning of a new chapter for the club as they seek to establish themselves in League One.

The former Nigeria international has developed a growing interest in sports investment since retiring from professional football in 2018.

He is the founder and owner of Lumira Group, an investment company with interests in sports, education, healthcare and infrastructure across the United Kingdom.

Anichebe was also recently involved in a proposed £20 million leisure development project in Liverpool.

His interest in Bromley follows an earlier attempt to acquire non-league club Gateshead last year, although that proposed takeover did not materialise.

Anichebe’s football career

During his playing career, the former striker had stints at Everton, West Bromwich Albion and Sunderland in the Premier League between 2006 and 2017.

He scored 27 Premier League goals and registered 12 assists during his spells with the three clubs.

At international level, Anichebe earned 11 caps for the Super Eagles and scored once for Nigeria in a 3-0 friendly match victory over Kenya in 2011.

He won a silver medal with Nigeria’s U-23 Dream Team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where he scored a goal against Japan during the tournament.

Having moved into business following his retirement, the former striker is now hoping to make his mark in English football from the boardroom rather than on the pitch.
