Chidera Ejuke has once again found himself at the centre of controversy after videos surfaced of the Nigerian winger playing matches on rough, unmarked pitches in his homeland despite recently recovering from a serious muscle injury that sidelined him for nearly half the season.
Sevilla officials are reportedly unsettled by the player’s actions during his off-season break.
The 26-year-old was spotted taking part in casual street football games with friends on dusty pitches in Nigeria, appearing to disregard any precautions regarding his physical condition following the injury he sustained earlier in the year.
“Ejuke’s current behaviour, engaging in carefree, unsupervised matches during the holidays, is being interpreted by club insiders as a reflection of the same impulsiveness and lack of discipline that marked his inconsistent debut season in Spain,” AS stated.
“Sevilla are now reportedly open to offers for the winger and would not resist his departure if a suitable bid arrives.”
Sevilla narrowly avoided relegation to the Segunda División last season and have continued to face a tumultuous period both on and off the pitch.
Multiple reports in Spain said the club currently have a fractured fanbase who are growing frustration with the current board of directors, and the need for a drastic turnaround ahead of the 2025/26 campaign as tensions in the Andalusian capital remain high.
Amid this unrest, some players have drawn criticism not only for their on-pitch performances but also for perceived unprofessional behaviour, with Ejuke being a prominent example.
The Nigerian was also criticised by fans after another viral TikTok video showed him playing a casual game while wearing a Valencia shirt with the name and number of his friend, Umar Sadiq.
In spite of the backlash, another clip also surfaced showing Ejuke again in informal action, this time drawing ridicule from fans for failing to complete a single dribble during the footage.
The videos, according to Diario De Sevilla, have reportedly made its way to Spain, sparking renewed anger among supporters, many of whom view his behaviour as “an unacceptable lack of professionalism.”
Ejuke’s debut campaign at Sevilla was far from smooth. Signed in last summer as the first acquisition under sporting director Víctor Orta, he arrived with little fanfare and few expectations.
However, he quickly impressed in pre-season with his dribbling and flair, though he struggled to establish himself as a consistent attacking threat in a side desperately short on goals.
After a tentative start, Ejuke broke into the first team in matchday three of La Liga and delivered his breakthrough moment in late September, scoring against Real Valladolid. The goal earned him the club’s Player of the Month award from the fans and suggested that he might become a key figure in Sevilla’s attack.
That momentum was short-lived. A muscle injury suffered during a clash against Barcelona sidelined him for nearly two months.
He made his return in mid-January during a win against Girona, but despite showing glimpses of quality, he never truly regained his place under then-manager Xavi García Pimienta.
Ejuke’s first start since October came on March 9 against Real Sociedad, a match in which he scored the decisive goal to earn three points for Sevilla. But his form quickly dipped again.
Following the arrival of Joaquín Caparrós, Ejuke was relegated to the fringes, featuring only in 45 minutes of Caparrós’ debut match against Alavés. From then on, he managed just 14 minutes across three substitute appearances and remained on the bench for the rest.
