Eguavoen breaks silence on reports linking him to Super Eagles job after World Cup qualifiers

Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation, Augustine Eguavoen, has dismissed reports linking him to the Super Eagles coaching role as a replacement for Eric Chelle.

Reports circulating in the media suggest that the NFF is considering bringing back Eguavoen to lead the Super Eagles’ 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign, should Eric Chelle fail to qualify Nigeria for the FIFA World Cup.

Former Flying Eagles coach Ladan Bosso has also been rumoured to be Eguavoen's first assistant for the tournament, which will kick off in Morocco in December.

In response to the reports, Eguavoen, who has led the Super Eagles on an interim basis in four different spells, described the rumours as baseless.

He expressed his support for the Malian tactician and his desire to see the team succeed.

“I feel very hurt by these baseless rumours because I really have no idea where they are coming from,” Eguavoen told thenff.com.

“I have a very good working relationship with Coach Eric Chelle, and I have absolutely no interest in taking over the squad. I am praying for him to succeed.

“This was how the same speculators created schism and disaffection between myself and Gernot Rohr and José Peseiro when these gentlemen coached the Super Eagles at different periods. It is uncalled for.

“We all need to work together to see the Super Eagles qualify for the World Cup and win the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations championship in Morocco.”
